Wells Fargo, the fourth-largest bank in the United States by total assets, has not been getting much love on this website for an excellent reason.
Wells Fargo has been known for defrauding its consumers for the past few years. The American multinational bank inaccurately foreclosed on their clients, signed them up for insurance, credit cards, and other financial products without their consent, and depleted their checking accounts by charging them excessive fees.
In 2020 alone, Wells Fargo agreed to pay $3 billion to resolve federal civil and criminal investigations into the fake-account scandal, $35 million to the Security Exchange Commission (SEC) to settle a case involving a failure to properly supervise investment advisors and $20 to the state of Maryland in settlement of allegations it misled investors over the safety of its residential mortgage-backed securities.
